Working Overtime Increases Heart Disease Risk According to a study published in the European Heart Journal, people who regularly work overtime and put in 10 to 11 hours of work daily increase their risk of heart disease by 60 percent. The researchers offer a number of possible explanations for the finding. People who spend more time at work have less time to exercise, relax, and unwind. They are also more likely to be stressed and anxious, and less likely to take time off work when sick. Experts say the findings |

dollars on training to derive the benefits, say researchers from University of North Carolina in a study published in the Journal of Pain. They recruited college students who had never meditated before and gave them a single hour of meditation training, spread out over three consecutive ays. They found that the meditation training appeared to influence pain perception even when the trained study subjects weren’t meditating. The researchers think meditation is effective because it reduces emotional responses to pain, including anxiety and anticipation. Ultrasound As A Male Contraceptive Scientists at University of North

highlight the People who carry a lot of weight around their midsection are at increased risk of developing dementia, according to a study of more than 700 adults conducted at Boston University School of Medicine. The study found that being overweight is importance of work-life balance. Leading a healthy lifestyle is even more important if you work overtime. ‘Beer Belly’ Linked to Alzheimer’s Disease associated with smaller brain volume, a factor linked with dementia. The link was particularly strong in those with high levels of visceral fat (which lies deep inside the abdomen, surrounding the abdominal organs and that you normally don’t see). The results are not all that surprising when you consider that a large belly is associated with high blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes – all major risk factors for dementia. Carolina are investigating the use of ultrasound as a reversible contraceptive for men. They believe that a blast of ultrasound to the testes can safely stop sperm production for six months. Once the testes have stopped producing sperm and all existing sperm reserves have been depleted, the men become temporarily infertile. The scientists’ long-term goal is to use ultrasound from therapeutic instruments that are commonly found in sports medicine or physical therapy clinics as an inexpensive, long-term, reversible male contraceptive. Women Lose More Fat When Drinking Milk After Resistance Training McMaster University researchers report in the June issue of Medicine and Science in Sport and Exercise that women who drink two large glasses of milk after weight-lifting exercises gain more muscle and lose more fat than women who drink sugar-based energy drinks. The women in the study who drank milk barely gained any weight, because what they gained in lean muscle was offset by the loss of fat. “Resistance training is not a typical choice of exercise for women, but the health benefits of resistance training are enormous,” says Stuart M. Phillips, professor of kinesiology at McMaster University. “It boosts strength, bone, muscular and metabolic health in a way that other types of exercise cannot.” |
