City Pollution Raises Blood Pressure German researchers from the University of Duisburg-Essen have found a link between long-term exposure to urban air pollution and high blood pressure. The link remained even when other factors were taken into account that influence blood pressure like age, gender, smoking and weight. Increases in blood pressure were greater in women than in men. The lead researcher Dr. Barbara Hoffman says: “Our results |

They say that those whose doctors failed to talk to them about sex were most likely to avoid it. The lead researcher Dr Stacy Tessler Lindau urges doctors to give their patients information about resuming their sex lives when they are discharged. Many people are scared of having sex after a heart attack in case the exertion causesanother one. But this is extremely unlikely. Experts say it is safe for heart attack survivors to start having sex again once they are capable of moderate exercise, such as climbing a few flights of stairs. show that living in areas with higher levels of particle air pollution is associated with higher blood pressure... This finding points out that air pollution does not only trigger life-threatening events like heart attacks and strokes, but that it may also influence the underlying processes, which lead to chronic cardiovascular diseases. It is therefore necessary to further our attempts to prevent chronic exposure to high air pollution as much as possible.” Sugar Drops Ease Baby Jab Pain and Reduce Crying Time Experts at the University of Toronto say that infants under one year old when given a few drops of glucose solution before immunisation are 20 % less likely to cry following a jab. The researchers also found that it led to a small reduction in the amount of time a baby spent crying following a jab. “Healthcare professionals should consider using sucrose or glucose before and during immunisation,” say the researchers. disease. The study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association found that those who drank more than six cups of tea a day cut their risk of heart disease by a third while those who drank between two and four cups of coffee a day lowered the risk of the disease by a fifth. Tea and coffee drinkers were also no more likely to die of any cause, including stroke and cancer, than those who abstained. Other experts point out that leading an overall healthy lifestyle is very important for heart health. For example, having a cigarette with your coffee or tea could completely cancel out their benefits. Also remember that too much caffeine could cause insomnia. Drinking During Pregnancy May Damage the Future Fertility of Sons Danish researchers reported recently to the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology conference that in a study of almost 350 young men, sperm levels were lower in those whose mothers had consumed alcohol during pregnancy compared with teetotallers. The magnitude of drop in sperm count in the men increased with the quantity of alcohol consumed by their mothers during pregnancy. The sperm levels were a third lower in those whose mothers had drunk more than four drinks a week. The lower the sperm count in men the more difficult it is for them to get their partners pregnant. The current expert advice is to abstain from alcohol during pregnancy altogether. |
